Walking

Two mansions are visible along this circuit: Houzillé and Bois Roux. According to the website of the municipality of Vergéal (www.vergeal.fr), "a legend claims that a 6 km long underground connects the Bois Roux to the manor of Houzillé and continues to the manor located in the village de Vergéal at the corner of the main crossroads. It ends its journey in the sacristy of Torcé. It is said that this underground conceals 2 barrels of Louis d'Or. A bet had, it seems, pushed local workers to borrow with lamps to find the treasure. Unfortunately, these men never reappeared on the surface, having undoubtedly fallen into an abyss during their journey. The story told by the population only serves to maintain the legend of the Louis Golden."

Step 1

"Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, celebrated on the day of the Visitation, the Church of Vergéal forms a cross, of which the upper part alone is old. buttresses with pinnacles in the ornate ogival style and emblazoned with crude escutcheons. To the north of the choir is an old seigniorial chapel (certainly Houzillé) in the same style, now converted into a sacristy. Finally, a richly ornamented door and credenza complete the proof that this chanceau must date from the 15th century. As for the nave and the two chapels forming arms of the cross, they are modern and were only built in 1851: flamboyant windows (stained glass) were opened there corresponding to the ornamentation of the choir and a bell tower has been erected at the bottom of the nave. The brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament was founded in this church in 1747 by the rector Olivier Fouassier. The church lost its spire erected in 1859 and felled by a terrible cyclone in 1929."
