Prince de Conty – Poetic and musical underwater fiction | Château des Bretonnières

As part of the Thélème cultural season, culture in the countryside at the Château des Bretonnières in Erbrée.

CREATION. A poetic and musical fiction, freely inspired by the story of the sinking of the ship Prince de Conty. An immersive experience, listened to through headphones, in the world of the Garden Party trio.

Underwater fiction: Freely inspired by the sinking of the ship Prince de Conty in the 18th century and the discovery of its wreck two centuries later, this poetic and musical fiction created and performed by the Garden Party trio and Johan Caballé invites the public to dive in an adventure on the sea and in its depths, to encounter a fabulous story which could have been forgotten if a treasure had not resurfaced.

The voice weaves a story between two eras, on the deck of a merchant ship and under the sea, where historical characters and imaginary ghosts meet. The music composed for clavichord, analog keyboards and drums carries the story and its borders, real or fantasized, with elegance and dreaminess.

History: In 1745, the East India Company merchant ship Prince de Conty left the port of Lorient and headed for China. Returning after 20 months of navigation and bringing back from China and Brazil all kinds of riches – silk, gold, porcelain, coffee, cocoa, the ship was caught in a storm off the coast of Belle-Île in Locmaria, and was shipwreck. Of the 229 crew members, only a few made it out alive.

The wreck fell into oblivion for more than two centuries but in 1974 a diver found it. The discovery of a first gold ingot – from the Qing dystania, led to the looting of the wreck the following year. Its access is then prohibited to the public for archaeological excavations. These notably made it possible to find porcelain and gold ingots but they were interrupted by a storm which buried the wreck again.

The story could end there but in 2018, in California, gold bars bearing the same hallmark as those of the Prince de Conty were put up for sale at an auction. French justice is currently seized of the case.
