Step 1

La Valière is a dam that was filled with water in 1978. It represents 138 ha of land in the municipalities of Vitré, Erbrée and Etrelles. With a capacity of 5,7 million m3, this body of water covers an area of 95 ha. It mainly performs reserve functions for the drinking water supply and low-water support. The surrounding area is 43 ha. A gravity pipe feeds the La Billerie drinking water production plant directly from the dam.

Step 2

This body of water is home to many species of sedentary or migratory birds, particularly in winter: mallards, whistling ducks, shoveler, great crested grebes, great cormorants, black-headed gulls, moorhens and coots.

Step 4

The castle that can be seen in the distance is none other than the home of the famous writer Madame de Sévigné, whom she discovered after her marriage in 1644. From this medieval residence where she made sixteen stays, she wrote 294 of these very famous letters, most of which are addressed to his daughter Françoise. Today, several parts of the private building and the French garden (created in 1689 by André Le Nôtre, during the Marquise's last stay) are open to the public. Next to the Château des Rochers is a magnificent 18-hole golf course.
